Why Don't I Enjoy Making Art As Much As I Used to?

For a long time I've had a lot of trouble making art. I found it extremely difficult to stay motivated, focussed and confident about anything I started making.

Recently, that changed. Now I am excited to work on new drawings, paintings & other experiments and find that the biggest things getting in my way are logistical issues like time and money.

After seeing my live nightclub appearances where I've made art in front of hundreds of people, I've had friends ask me "How do you do that? Aren't you nervous? Aren't you worried about screwing it up? Aren't you scared about what people think?"

Well yeah, of course I am at some level.

But I've had those same feelings when I make work in private as well.

The thing is, those feelings are all in your mind- you can take them with you no matter where you are or who else is around, and they stem from your motives for making art. You can hold on to them, or you can change the way you think, even if you're in front of hundreds of people.

A lot of my creative friends have told me the same story about their creative lives that I've experienced in mine:

Once upon a time they made art because they enjoyed it. That was the only reason they made it really. Hours flew past as they became absorbed in expressing themselves through their artwork.

Then at some point, new ideas were introduced about what it meant to be a 'successful artist'. Essentially this meant selling work, gaining representation, winning prizes and getting exposure. Somewhere along the line, art became something difficult, anxiety ridden and basically no fun. My friends began to feel that making art was something they should do, rather than something they wanted to do. They made less work, and the quality of their work suffered.

If this sounds familiar, I'd like to suggest my belief about why this is the case.

I believe it's about the motivation behind making art, and I think it can be boiled down to Internal vs External motivation.

To sum it up briefly, it goes like this:

Selling work, being picked up by galleries, winning prizes- these are all great rewards and great signs of success, but they are all External rewards. They are rewards that come to you from outside. Because they are external to you, they are outside your control. You can't make someone like your work. So if you set out to achieve these things, you actually have no control over your success. Your feeling of success will fluctuate with what's popular, you'll either cling to what's proven to work or find yourself chasing fashions. You'll find that making art is an anxious process because you're never really in control.

The opposite to that is to base your motives for making art on Internal rewards. This is where you make art that challenges you, pushes you and excites you as an artist, without consideration for other people's opinions. Essentially you make art for yourself, you are probably more focussed on the process rather than the outcome and you are more likely to grow and develop as an artist. This is because you're trying to keep things exciting for yourself, rather than please other people and get them to buy your work.

This is an extremely brief introduction to the idea but I've found it is a profoundly powerful change in how I make art. It doesn't stop me from getting nervous about how my work might be received, but it does stop that from being my main concern.

I didn't come up with this idea myself either- it's partly based on the psychologist Mihalyi Csíkszentmihályi's concept of Flow, a state of 'optimal experience' that highly motivated artists, musicians, dancers, rock climbers and many others described to him through his studies.

So anyway, if you don't enjoy art as much as you used to, maybe you should ask yourself why you're making it, and who you're making it for.

798 Art Zone - Beijing's Cutting Edge Art District

History

In the early 1950's the Chinese military was in urgent need of modern electronic equipment that Chinese manufacturing capacity at the time could not supply. To solve this shortage and to help speed up China's industrialization, Chinese government under Chairman Mao's leadership set up a joint venture with East Germany.

The joint venture was the 718 Joint Factory that began operation in 1957 on a 500,000 square meter site in the Dashanzi area of Beijing that was farmland at the time. The factory was one of the best in China and employed between 10,000 and 20,000 workers during its operation.

In 1967 the 718 factory was divided into smaller units or factories to improve management. Those factories were 706, 707, 751, 761, 797 and 798. Factory 798 was the largest of the smaller factories.

During Deng Xiao Ping's reforms during the 1980's, 718 was cut off from government support and forced to become competitive. Unable to survive, 718 declined in the 1990's and the smaller factories were gradually closed down and buildings left vacant.

At this time Beijing's contemporary and modern art community was loosely based in Tongzhou district which was over an hour's drive from the center of Beijing. Starting in 1995 various prominent artist left Tongzhou and set up work shops, studios and galleries in Factory 798 and 718's other abandoned factory buildings

Venues

There are many studios, shops, galleries, exhibitions, centers, works of art and places of interest in 798 and wandering around 798 visiting these venues is enjoyable, thought provoking and sometimes a little disturbing. There are too many venues too describe so I have included below descriptions and photos the ones I found most outstanding during my recent visit.

Baiyaxuan 798 Art Center

This is a gallery supported by the Baiyazuan Art & Cultural Institute and has many very impressive paintings on display. The building hosting the gallery was originally a dining hall and auditorium for the 718 Joint Factory.

Ullens Center for Contemporary Art UCCA

UCCA is a non profit art center founded by two Belgian art collectors Guy and Myriam Ullens. The center uses 8,000 square meters of space to provide an art experience that includes and combines exhibitions, programs and events, fine dining and shopping. Personally I found it impressive but felt the shopping and eating were out of place. It is extremely popular so you should enjoy it.

798 Photo Gallery

This gallery is the first in China dedicated to photography and the aim of the gallery to find and collect awesome photography and to act as a center of cultural and commercial exchange for photographers. The photographs on display at the time I was there were all black and whites and the minimalist black and white interior of the building was a great combination. The gallery also has a state of the art professional black and white dark room.

798 Space

798 Space is pretty much the heart of 798 and is located in the original 798 factory building with its unique curved roof and Mao slogans. The building has an area of 1000 square meters, can easily hold 1000 guests and is often used for contemporary art exhibitions, forums, dances, concerts fashion shows, product launches, press conferences and more. 798 Space also has a book shop and an area for showing films and videos.

Fascinating to see how 798 Space pays tribute to China's socialist past and present by combining art and politics. The remnants of factory machinery and red Mao slogans on the room together with art displays create a great effect.

China Space

This is a large gallery tucked away from the main area of 798 and normally used for solo exhibitions. When I visited, the gallery was exhibiting oil paintings by Zhu Jin, a well known artist from Chongqing. His paintings are not the type I'd hang around the house but they definitely have character.

Originality Square

Originality Square is a large square in the middle of 798 that holds outdoor exhibitions. Currently on display is the "Wolf is coming" sculpture collection and some very unusual individual sculptures.

Getting There

798 is very easy to get to by bus. Catch the 401 bus from the bus stop next to the H exit at the Dongzhimen subway station on line two. Get off at the 10th bus stop which will be the Dashanzi Lukou Nan stop. 798 will be just across the road can you can't miss the big red 798 sign.

Alternatively you can catch the subway to Sanyuanqiao station on line 10 then catch a taxi to 798. The taxi ride will take no more than 5 minutes and cost no more than 10rmb. Tell the taxi driver to go to 798 or Yishuqu. The area is famous and all the taxi drivers will know where it is.

Travel Tips

The area is open all the time but most of the galleries and studios will only be open between 11am to 6pm so try to avoid going out side these times. Many of these galleries and studios also close on Mondays.

To see most of the venues and fully take in the atmosphere of 798, plan to be there for at least three hours.

Using Color To Evoke Emotion

The color spectrum was discovered in 1666 when Sir Isaac Newton passed pure white light through a prism, realizing it separates into all visible colors. Most of today's artists and designers know that yellow and blue make green and what constitutes a warm color or a cool color, but I've found that very few of them know or respect the psychology of green or how warm colors make the viewer feel.

This article will be a general overview of the how the primary colors of the spectrum evoke emotion. In later articles, I will go into more detail and commit an entire article to each primary color.

No matter if you are an interior designer or a website designer, choosing the correct color scheme can really make or break your design. When first meeting a client to discuss their project, I do not necessarily ask them what color scheme they are looking for. I will ask them what they want people to feel. I find it better to say, 'can you give me three words to describe what you want this to look like." If they respond with words like, "sleek, technical, powerful" then I will be sure to have a color scheme of dark grays and black, and use bright, vibrant colors for accents. If I am meeting with a medical facility, and they give me words like, "healthy, clean, professional", then a white with green and yellow color scheme would be more appropriate.

Red: - Associated with Love, Heat, evokes Anger, Intensity, Excitement. Often used in movies to signify a dangerous situation, character or prop. Find Artistic Color Harmony Using Discordant Colors From the Wheel

Artistic color harmony using the Munsell Color Wheel.

According to Wikipedia "In colorimetry, the Munsell color system is a color space that specifies colors based on three color dimensions: hue, value (lightness), and chroma (color purity). It was created by Professor Albert H. Munsell in the first decade of the 20th century"

Dr Munsell measured color in a way that had not been known before. Being an artist and art teacher he wanted to find a better way of mixing colors and achieving better color harmony.

Color Harmony

Fast forward many years where I find an extremely well written book, "Color Harmony in you Paintings", written by Margaret Kessler.

Being an oil painter at the time, this book appealed to me for several reasons but one was because it demonstrated and used the Munsell System. Since this book came into my possession I've studied this system and used it to achieve more artistic color harmony in my paintings.

In this post how to use the discordant colors of blue and orange for an example, will be explored.

In her "Color Harmony in your Paintings" book, Margaret Kessler gives a wheel using tube color names and also furnishes a diagram to make and use with this particular color wheel. After using this method of painting my paintings stayed brighter, it was easier to decide which pigment I needed to use - where and so on.

So, now to the colors of today - Blue and Orange - and using Kessler's colors on the wheel. When the transparent diagram is placed over the wheel with Phthalo Blue being the dominant color, Cad Red Light is the complementary color. That is probably not too surprising to you but, the discordant colors could be a surprise. In this example they are Red-Violet and Yellow-Green.

"The Red-Violet could be Venetian Red, Rose Madder, Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Red

The Yellow-Green could be Lemon Yellow, Cad. Yellow Pale or Cad. Yellow Light." Margaret Kessler. When these analogous colors are used in a painting they are bright and cheerful, giving the painting an uplifting and happy feeling.

Neutrals and semi-neutrals created from this harmony are much brighter and more lively than when mixed with more traditional color harmonies.

It is not to be said that traditional or the Munsell system are any better or worse than each other. The Munsell system just presents more color harmony in paintings.

Airbrushing Fish Tips

When it comes to fish taxidermy, one of the most important aspects is getting the color right. After the skin has been given a chance to dry, the color will fade. That's why airbrushing the fish is necessary. In order to do it right, there are a few things that you need to know. Here are a few tips.

Airbrushing is one of the most difficult processes to get right. You will have a much easier time if you're working with a fresh fish. You should know that different fish have different colors, with those of cold water and warm water fish being completely different. You can buy kits that provide you with the colors that you need.

It's also important to note that there are various types of paints that you can use to create your artistic effects. Transparent paints, as their name suggests, will allow underlying opaque colors to show through. Opaque paints won't show the underlying colors, so you can use them to cover up other paints. If you want your fish to have a brilliant color, then consider using metallic paint too. Some fish are known for having a pearl look, which you can replicate with pearlescent colors.

When it comes to airbrushing fish, there are also two main categories of paints that you can use, namely lacquer and water-based. It's best that beginners avoid using lacquer because it's very hazardous and you will need to use a special spray booth which is very expensive.

The advantage of using lacquer is that they're very easy to thin. They also produce more brilliant colors than their water-based counterparts. You also don't have to worry as much about the paint drying on the tip if you use a retarder.

Water-based paints may be a bit more difficult for you to work with at first, but you'll get used to them over time. They're harder to thin since you have to use alcohol, water, and a retarder combined correctly. Another common problem is that they'll clog up your tips much easier.

When you use a water-based paint for airbrushing trophy fish, you always need to wear a dust mask. If you don't, you may breathe in paint which will then enter your lungs. This will dramatically increase your risk of developing health problems in the future.

There is an assortment of tip sizes that you can use. You should have a variety of tip sizes so that you can choose based on the level of detail you want to achieve. Size 1 tips will come in handy when you need to make very fine strokes. The paint will need to be thinned pretty well in order to use a tip this size.

Size 3 tips produce medium-level of detail. The paint will still need to be thinned, but not nearly as much as when working with a size 1. Size 5 tips are used for working with thicker paints that haven't been thinned yet.

In order to airbrush a fish, you will also need to get your hands on a compressor. There are various things to consider when buying one. If you'll be painting all day in your shop, make sure that the compressor can withstand the continued usage throughout the day. Also, take into account how much noise the compressor will make.

The Golden Age of Chinese Art

The 1930s were not a time most people would think to be a Golden Age. The images of this period in America are not particularly inspiring due to the Great Depression and every thing that went with its economic woes. However, the art of China did experience a sharp rise in demand during this very time period. It seems hard to believe today. Interest in Chinese art had been growing at a steady pace for some time by the 1930s. At the noteworthy Freer Gallery of Art the arrival of Chinese works was the culmination of C.T. Loo's unique business. The size and quality of the gallery's Chinese collection grew in number at this same time. It is a fact that the acquisitions made during this difficult economic era were higher in value than those of the decade before or after. The "Golden Age" for Chinese art had come upon the American and international scene!

Back in the 1930s the Freer Gallery of Art concentrated on metal works (23 pieces in all). It also acquired jade (49 pieces) and paintings (23 pieces). The gallery spent more than $249,950 on Chinese acquisitions specifically. As the decade progressed the gallery's Chinese artworks reached three new heights: $249,950 in 1930, $176,850 in 1935, and $160,550 in 1939. In addition to these purchases, Chinese art research at the gallery was increased. Structurally speaking, the gallery's installation changes gave the eastern wing of the gallery building over to the exclusive exhibition of the art from China.

In the mid to late 1930s, the growth of the Chinese art related activity at the Freer was simply a part of a much larger picture. It is true that in the United States interest in Chinese artworks was spreading to regional and newly established museums. Some of these places included the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Nelson Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and the City Art Museum of St. Louis. During this time, the study of Chinese art and its civilization became more widespread than ever before. The consideration of the culture of China had become a subject for deeper, academic contemplation. In fact, a new generation of American scholars and curators had emerged to give China a closer look. One such person was Archibald G. Wenley (1898-1962). He was the first American curator seriously trained in the Chinese language and its culture.

A short review of the new activity back in China also seems to be necessary. In China at this time, the antique business continued to prosper. In the mid thirties the antique trades of Shanghai reached their pinnacle of success. Interesting to note is the fact that there were about 210 antique shops in the community along the Guangdong Road. The government of China had begun to devote more attention to the cultural heritage of the nation. One event which bloomed from the antique business was the government sponsored excavation at Anyang. The excavation continued until the year 1937. This excavation yielded some of the most incredible findings. Therefore, to promote the glory which rightfully belonged to China and its civilization the government sent a great number of art and archeological pieces to London. These pieces became a part of the International Exhibition of Chinese Art at the famous Royal Academy in 1935 and 1936. This landmark exhibition included more than three thousand artworks from some two hundred lenders all over the world. So the evidence for the international fever over Chinese art was very transparent.

Such a shift toward Chinese art at a time as unlikely as the 1930s does seem hard to comprehend today as one looks back on history. The seeds of interest were indeed sown across the United State prior to this decade. The timing of their bloom might appear to be odd. Even so, the thoughtful student of this period should be reminded that such trends are often the result of several cultural and economic forces in play at the same time. Chinese culture, along with the influx of Chinese people to America, had been going on for quite some time. There was a definite shift in the thinking of academics toward the Middle Kingdom already taking place. Chinese art in America had simply of age. In truth, there was no stopping these events by the time this Golden Age arrived!

In this lesson, we will cover the step by step of drawing manga and that is to create the basic frame work of your manga character.

The First Step Of Drawing Manga

Our first step to drawing manga is rather simple but very important. We are going to draw super-simplified stick figures to represent your manga character.

To do this, use only circles and lines to form your figure. Use the circles to represent the joints at the elbows, ankles, knees, hips, wrists, and shoulders. And use the straight lines for the torso, neck, arms, and legs.

Now, once you got that down, it's time to spice it up a little. Draw the stick figure in a variety of poses. Here's some ideas: standing, kicking, sitting, or anything you'd like.

Draw them over and over again until you get comfortable and are ready to come up with your own. Draw as many of these as you can.

By practicing this manga drawing exercise, you not only train yourself to be able to come up with dynamic poses on the fly but you'll also get good at keeping your figures in proportion and realistically positioned.

In manga a character's physical attribute can vary greatly from super tall and slender to really short and stumpy. In order to become a great manga artist, you should become familiar with how to draw all of these body types.

Buying antique prints can be a daunting task if you have no guidelines to follow. Each antique dealer has different standards and it can be difficult to determine if the old antique print you are buying is the real thing or not. Avoid Making "Mud" While Painting in Artist Oils

When you are ready to mix a desired color, first ask yourself, "What is it closest if you had to call it either Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue or Purple?"

Then ask yourself the following three questions:
1. "How warm or cool is it?" relative to the primary or secondary you selected
2. "How light or dark is it?" relative to a tone chart ranging from black to white
3. "How bright or dull is it?"

The first question determines the HUE of the color
The second questions determines the TONE of the color
The third questions determines the CHROMA of the color

All colors have these three aspects.
The hue, tone and chroma must be recognized to be able to mix any color accurately.

HUE refers to the tendency of a color to lean toward the adjacent color on the wheel. I like to use 18 hue color wheel consisting of the six spectrum colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) plus a warm and cool version of each of these six, for a total of 18 hues. The palette I frequently use is Cadmium Red Light or Winsor Red, Cadmium Yellow Light or Winsor Yellow, French Ultramarine Blue. I also add Viridian and Permanent Alizarin to make an equal intensity color wheel. Without these two additional tubes it is difficult to achieve bright chroma in the greens and purples.

Now, here is the master tip to avoid muddy mixtures while you are painting. If the chroma needs to be dulled down, if at all possible hold the tone of the two complementary hues that you will be mixing together.

So for instance, if you are mixing flesh, and have determined the person's flesh you are mixing is an orange hue in a 4 tone on a scale from 1-10 (1 being light and 10 being dark.) Then mix the complementary blue in a 4 tone before introducing the blue and the orange together. That way you can leave the two mixtures "under mixed" which results in wonderfully exciting brushwork that gives the flesh luminosity. If the flesh is a four tone, and both the blue and the orange are four tones, then you have not missed the opportunity to create change which in turn creates alive looking flesh instead resembling silly putty.

Make sure your color wheel is accurate. Make your own from the above limited palette. You can always test every hue on the wheel by cross-mixing complementary hues directly across from each other. They should cancel each other out and create gray that has no color cast to it.

Test out all the hues you have mixed on your color wheel to see if you really have complementary hues.
A reliable color wheel is essential if you are going to be able to apply this color mixing formula and get the expected results.

They are also a low-cost, high-quality alternative to expensive, labor-intensive custom paint jobs, in that unlike traditional custom vehicle painting, a vehicle cover can be easily removed when you're done with whatever job necessitated its installation. This is especially helpful if you're leasing a vehicle, rather than simply modifying one you already own.

What Type of Material Should I Use?

Now that you know what a vehicle cover is, the next step in the vehicle wrap installation process is choosing the right material for your needs. There are basically two types of material used in car wraps, and, as with many other things in life, which one you choose to work with depends upon your budget and the needs of your particular project. Here's a breakdown of each material, along with a handy guide on why you might choose to use one over the other:

Cast Film: The entire point of car wraps is to mimic the look of a custom paint job without actually having a custom paint job. Vehicle wraps made of cast film accomplish this very well. This is due to the fact that the material used to make the cover has an inherent ability to conform to - that is, mold to the shape of - the vehicle undergoing the wrap. Additionally, cast film is, on average, about two millimeters thick, which helps it give vehicles that "just painted" look. Finally, cast film vehicle covers are also extremely durable, lasting up to five years. The trade-off to all of this is, as you might have guessed, price. Cast film is more expensive than the other material used to make car wraps...

Vinyl: Unlike cast film, which is used almost exclusively for full vehicle wraps, vinyl is used for individual graphics. This helps cut the price of the vinyl option (so if you're on a budget, this may be for you), but it is also less durable and prone to aesthetic abnormalities. The bottom line is that vinyl will do the job, but it is not designed to be a long-term solution.

How to Apply Your Vehicle Wrap

To apply your vehicle cover, a thorough cleaning of your car's exterior is necessary. Make sure you remove all waxes and other substances, or the wrap won't stick! After everything is nice and clean, you want to make sure that your temperature is optimal - around 75 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes the cover more pliable, and thus, easier to apply. If you're working with vinyl graphics, you'll want to place them where you want them, and then tape them down with masking tape. In both cases, final application will be accomplished using a squeegee (you'll then want to remove any tape). An air release tool of some kind will be helpful in eliminating any bubbles that might form, and of course, a tape measure is always advised. Lastly, in the case of full vehicle wraps, you'll want a very sharp blade for cutting & trimming purposes (around the door handles, wheel wells, and so on). It's worth noting that you can do all of this by yourself, but having help makes it both easier and more fun!
